UFO - Britain Hard Rock


UFO are an English heavy metal and hard rock band that was formed in 1969. UFO became a transitional group between early hard rock and heavy metal and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. UFO were ranked No. 84 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Singer Phil Mogg, guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way, and drummer Andy Parker formed the band in August 1969. Originally taking the name Hocus Pocus, the group changed their name in October 1969 to UFO in honour of the London club where they were spotted by Noel Moore, who signed them to Beacon Records label, which was headed by Antiguan-born Milton Samuel. 



Their eponymously titled first album debuted in 1970 and was a typical example of early hard rock including a heavy version of the Eddie Cochran's classic "C'mon Everybody". Both UFO 1 and its follow-up UFO 2: Flying, were successful in Japan (especially the single "C'mon Everybody" which became a huge hit there) and Germany (the song "Boogie For George," also from the first album, reached No. 30 in German singles charts as well as "Prince Kajuku" from Flying reached No. 26), but generated poor interest in Britain and America. Consequently, their third effort, Live (later re-issued as UFO Lands In Tokyo), was originally only released in Japan in 1971. Part of UFO's early work was strongly influenced by space rock (their second album, including a 26-minute title track and a 19-minute-long opus "Star Storm", was subtitled One Hour Space Rock) that was modestly popular at the time, but the band soon realised the style was somewhat limited. In January 1972, Mick Bolton left the group, and UFO set out to find a guitarist who could provide the band with a more standard rock sound.


UFO had many formations with great musicians, such as Michael Schenker, and had a new album in 2015 (A Conspiracy of Stars). Just a GREAT BAND!

In Limbo - Instrumental Progressive Rock (French)


French instrumental band IN LIMBO was formed back in 2002, originally a project that involved the creative partnership of Nicolas (guitars, drums) and Yome (bass, drums) but from 2010 and onwards a true band project following Florian's addition as a permanent member. Inspired by some of the Progressive & psychedelic rock masters (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Steven Wilson...), the trio tried to improve endlessly their own style and technical approach. 


As of February 2015 the band have three official productions to their name: The initial full length debut Somnebuleux from 2008, these days described as a demo by the band, their official debut album Interstices (which was recorded in the band's own home studio with Christelle (flute, organ) and Didier (drums) appeared as guest) from 2013 and the single Impression in D from 2014. All of them, at the time of writing, legally available as free downloads directly from the band. In Limbo is today unsigned and self-produced, and they fee that making profits this way is probably indecent which is why the albums are available free of charge.

Mas Que Nada!!!!


Gravada em 1963, para seu primeiro álbum, "Samba Esquema Novo", a canção é o primeiro grande sucesso de Jorge Ben (seu nome artístico na época), "Mas Que Nada" também é uma das canções brasileiras mais conhecidas no exterior, particularmente nos Estados Unidos da América, quando foi gravada pelo pianista e compositor brasileiro Sérgio Mendes. O balanço inovador dos arranjos fez da canção um grande sucesso no Brasil. "Mas Que Nada" não é uma canção que se enquadre na bossa nova tampouco no samba tradicional. 


Não por acaso, ela demorou para ser aceita pelo meio musical brasileiro, sendo gravada primeiramente pelo grupo Tamba Trio, em 1963. O sucesso da canção nos Estados Unidos viria após uma excursão de três meses naquele país, no qual Jorge Ben se apresentou em universidades e clubes, em 1965. No ano seguinte, Sérgio Mendes lançou uma versão da canção, em seu álbum "Herb Alpert Presents Sérgio Mendes & Brazil '66 ". Foi aí que se tornou grande sucesso nas paradas norte-americanas, alcançando a posição número quatro na parada "Adult Contemporary" e 47 na parada "Pop Singles" - ambas da Billboard. A importância da versão de Sérgio Mendes é traduzida por inúmeras versões feitas por artistas como Ella Fitzgerald, Al Jarreau, Trini Lopez e José Feliciano. Em 2006, "Mas Que Nada" foi remixada e regravada pelo grupo Black Eyed Peas com o próprio Sérgio Mendes, chegando a posição de número 13 na parada "Hot Dance Music/Club Play" da Billboard. A faixa foi incluída no jogo eletrônico para Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii e WiiU "Just Dance 4", contendo apenas os vocais dos integrantes do Black Eyed Peas.

Catharsis, the bloom of emotion, is the harbored hope for MICE ON STILTS as a sound, as symbol and a family. Life and its heaviness is not ignored in the ideology and creativity of MICE ON STILTS. Making sense of it all is the essence of what we are doing. As band members we find sound the most powerful means of expression through our instruments, and strive for a creative experience that invites others to share in what we've found to be life giving. Reaching for the corners of musical ideas, MICE ON STILTS collects sound in diversity, hosted by seven very different and unconventional musical talents. From lush sound-scapes to crushing walls of sound, the collision of the internal experience is exposed; raw, vulnerable and with all effort, real. MICE ON STILTS has worked relentlessly for two years, culturing and conveying its compositions to a wide and well loved audience. MICE ON STILTS started as an escape from an end for singer/writer Ben MORLEY. A dream for a different reality than one overwhelmed by the coarseness of life was seeded in Ben's mind. From a bedside passion project, it's flourished into a seven piece orchestration. MICE ON STILTS has seen members join this dream, a musical identity, and with each new contribution these songs have taken on water, and taken to the road across New Zealand.


AN OCEAN HELD ME is the first studio release from MICE ON STILTS. Adopting the DIY values of Aotearoa, this work has been refined, combed and fostered into an art that we believe in. Risking it all, the lyrical narrative built from the consequences and longings of love and the musical symbolism balanced on the edge of intensity and vacancy, which we hope will bring listeners into a beautiful listening reflection. We're taking braver steps with each challenge. Honing in our desire to take this to the world, this wild and beautiful live show is going to dangerous places, wherever and to whoever wants to take part.

Nigeria 70

The 2001 three-CD compilation Nigeria 70 was revelatory in that it introduced Westerners to the reality of post-independence Nigeria: that there was plenty of other music -- music of great variety -- to be found in the country besides that of Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade (although they too were included in the set). Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump takes it to the next step by digging deep and coming up with 16 obscure tracks that, like its predecessor, run the gamut stylistically. Ify Jerry Krusade's "Everybody Likes Something Good" is quasi-psychedelic, organ-dominated funk; Chief Checker's " Ire Africa" is deep roots reggae to rival anything emerging from Jamaica at the time; and Peacocks Guitar Band, on their "Eddie Quansa," turn to Latin rhythms for inspiration. Everything from hard soul to classic rock to jazz and, of course, the numerous indigenous Nigerian forms of juju, highlife, and palmwine shows up in this richly rewarding, historically vital collection of rarities.

Electric Sandwich were formed in late 1969 by a group of German students from Bonn. The band initially consisted of four musicians, all of whom had already played with other bands: bass player Klaus Lormann had been playing with "Chaotic Trust"; lead guitarist Jorg Ohlert used to be with "Slaves of Fire"; drummer Wolf Fabian, the founder of the band, had been touring with a band called "Muli and the Misfits", and singer Jochen "Archie" Carthaus sang with the "Flashbacks". Their own material has been recorded into the legendary Dieter Dirks Studio in Stommeln (1973 Brain catalogue). The music contains typical spaced out, freak n roll improvisations with many jazzy rock ingredients, folkish accents and Mellotron excursions.

HADDAD - Capixaba's Prog Rock

Banda capixaba que já esta na estrada desde 1993, Gustavo e Leandro Haddad, filhos do saxofonista Zezito Haddad - músico com marcante participação em conjuntos e grandes bandas de jazz de Vitória nos anos 40/50 - começaram a atuar como compositores e instrumentistas de rock a partir de 1980, tendo realizado, desde então, shows nos principais palcos capixabas, entre os quais, o Teatro Carlos Gomes, o Ginásio Dom Bosco e o Centro de Artes da UFES. Em 1985 fundaram o primeiro estúdio de múltiplos canais de Vitória: o Studio Um, que mantiveram em intensa atividade até 1990, gravando demos e discos para músicos independentes e produzindo jingles publicitários. Em 1987, participaram do I FEST UFES corn Camburi Blues, música classificada entre as oito melhores do festival. Ainda em 1987, gravam Camburi Blues para o disco oficial do FEST UFES e se apresentam na I Mostra da Música Capixaba no Rio de Janeiro, realizada no Teatro Sérgio Porto, em dezembro. Em 1988 gravam o LP Gustavo Haddad, somente corn músicas próprias, fortemente influenciado pelos grupos progressivos ingleses dos anos 70, em especial, Pink Floyd, Camel e Supertramp. 


A seguir, já corn a "rnarca" HADDAD, gravam e lançam o CD Haddad, trabalho desenvolvido nurn estilo mais direto, em que predominam canções e baladas pop. Entre abril de 1994 e maio de 1995, editam a primeira revista especializada em rock no Espírito Santo, denominada Long Live Rock, que alcançou excelente repercussão junto ao público consumidor de música no Estado. Em 1997, são lançados simultâneamente dois CDs: Deuses, Anjos, Homens & Bestas (rock progressivo) e Blues e Outros Bichos (blues/rock), sendo que o primeiro foi reeditado, cerca de urn ano depois, pelo selo carioca Rock Symphony, passando a ser distribuído em varios países da Europa, América Latina, Nova Zelândia e Japão, corn boa receptividade de público e crítica. Estes dois discos contam com o trabalho dos seguintes músicos: Gustavo (teclados e voz), Leandro (violão e voz), Paulo Pelissari (guitarras), Rubens Oliveira (baixo), Eric Carvalho (bateria) e Zezito (sax), considerada a "formação clássica" da banda Haddad. Em 1998, Gustavo e Leandro voltaram a se apresentar ao vivo no circuito de bares de Vitória (Brasil Pandeiro e Beco do Blues) . 



Em 2000, mais um CD é lançado em parceria com a Rock Symphony: Orion, trabalho que aprofunda o envolvimento do Haddad com o Rock Progressivo. Em 2001 é lançado Blue Notes, e retoma a trilha aberta por Blues e Outros Bichos. Vem sendo considerado por muitos o melhor trabalho da banda. Em 2003 é lançado Ars Longa VIta Brevis que supera Blue Notes em comentários positivos. O grupo fica conhecido em países como Japão, Austrália e reforça ainda mais sua penetração em solo europeu. Finalmente, em 2009, sai seu ultimo trabalho entitulado "Eros & Thanatos", mais uma vez pela dobradinha Rock Symphony/Musea Records, uma duple edição digipack.

Dream City - Denmark Blues Psych


Quadrinhos é uma de minhas paixões, e Gilbert Shelton é um dos melhores cartunistas de minha coleção. Ao ver um álbum com os fabulosos Freak Brothers na capa, encarte e CD, tive que adquiri-lo imediatamente. A banda é dinamarquesa, tocando um Blues Rock psicodélico, totalmente de acordo com o encarte. Com certeza, Phineas Phreak, Fat Freddy Freekowtski e Freewheelin' Franklin Freek curtiram muito este som.
