22 Pistepirkko - Rock from Finland

22-Pistepirkko was founded on the ashes of a punk rock band called “Matti Mätä & SS” at Utajärvi, a small village in Northern Finland, in the year 1980. The basic principles were surprisingly clear from the very start: Make it your own way; become professional; have an international career; try to stay open for new things and keep your act straight but adventurous; compose songs; write stories that are strong, funny, sad, happy, weird… and play them to people. 22-Pistepirkko is a Finnish popular music band formed in 1980. It was formed in a small rural village of Utajärvi in Northern Finland but moved to Helsinki, the capital of Finland, in 1985. The band now produces music in English, though at first their main language was Finnish. Their early albums were inspired by rock and roll and underground icons like Bo Diddley and The Sonics, but they have developed their unique sound by adding other influences to their music. Today they play an unconventional but distinctive mixture of pop, punk, rock and electronica, and achieved this fusion before artists such as Primal Scream or Beck popularized this kind of sound. During 22-Pistepirkko's 2001 European tour, director Andreas Haaning Christiansen traveled with the band and shot a documentary, Sleep good, rock well, which was released on DVD in 2005.

Freedonia - Funk-Jazz from Spain

“Freedonia” it is a group of ten professional musicians which has already conquered the major concert venues and festivals in Spain. In their rich music we can hear the influence of blues legends  Etta James, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson and Barbara Acklin as well as Spanish rhythms, jazz and classical fusions and afrobeat elements. As a Spanish group “Freedonia” distinguishes by spectacular and immensely energetic performances, various critics have a good opinion about this group, it has won numerous awards and however, as the members of the group say that the biggest victory is full concert halls. The group does not concentrate in one music style its repertoire is very broad and covers funky, afrobeat, jazz and rock elements. The main singer in a group “Freedonia” is Maika Sitte with an incredible voice, which tends to be similar to legendary blues singer Etta James. Her slightly rough voice cannot leave any neutral listeners. Listening to these groups concert, you can feel like in the third or fourth decade of the 20th century. But this is only a part of the challenge, which is created by ten inspiring musicians, they slightly leads you through the journey in a music world.

Marcia Elaine Hines, AM (born 20 July 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA), is an Australian vocalist, actress and TV personality. Hines made her debut, at the age of 16, in the Australian production of the stage musical Hair and followed with the role of Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar. She achieved her greatest commercial successes as a recording artist during the late 1970s with several hit singles, including cover versions of "Fire and Rain", "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself", "You" and "Something's Missing (In My Life)"; and her Top Ten albums Marcia Shines, Shining and Ladies and Gentlemen. Hines was voted "Queen of Pop" by TV Week's readers for three consecutive years from 1976. Hines stopped recording in the early 1980s until she returned with Right Here and Now in 1994, the same year she became an Australian citizen. She was the subject of the 2001 biography Diva: the life of Marcia Hines which coincided with the release of the compilation album Diva. Since 2003 she has been a judge on Australian Idol, and her elevated profile led to a renewed interest in her as a performer. Her 2006 album, Discotheque, peaked at number 6 on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) albums chart. Hines is the mother of singer Deni Hines, with whom she performed on the duet single "Stomp!" (2006). Hines lives near Newcastle, New South Wales, with Christopher Morrissey, her husband since 2005. Her status in the Australian music industry was recognised when she was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on 18 July 2007.

Um livro muito interessante, onde são apresentadas 1001 canções classificadas como as melhores gravadas até o lançamento do livro (creio que a primeira edição foi em 2012). De Tim Pay Alley a Brill Building, de Elvis Presley a Elvis Costello... São músicas icônicas e obscuras, hinos que inspiraram gerações e canções conhecidas apenas no meio underground. Cada música é deliciosamente acompanhada de uma resenha feita por uma equipe de jornalistas e críticos de música, detalhando a história, a inspiração e as versões alternativas das canções, além de situar o contexto cultural em que foram criadas. Algumas canções parecem até simplórias demais, mas a atmosfera e a influência que criou a fez ser incluída nesta seleção, que abrange os mais variados estilos, sendo uma verdadeira enciclopédia musical. O livro possui uma arte gráfica bem legal. Gostei demais desta idéia e como um colecionador, fiz um folder em minha coleção com as 1001 canções, e as disponibilizo aqui no Valvulado. Se você não tem o livro, compre-o e escute as músicas usando o livro como um guia. Bom divertimento!

8 Days in April - Eclectic Prog • Germany

Um grande álbum, já publicado em outros blogs, mas vale a pena escutar de novo!

This is a pretty unknown and uncommon band, despite its close relation with FRUMPY, which is a prog rock dream ensemble. It fits quite well, on the other hand, the scene of (hard) rock - having, in this case, the German authentic spark with several general and minimal influences - a musical scene which is rarely recognized or valued outside the obscure margins of its period. 8 DAYS IN APRIL's music is perfect for the taste in interesting or laid-back rock, since the album is also a mix of artistic and energized play, plus it's close to a collection meritous item, up in progressive rock's classic, hard or eclectic mentions.  The project was at first solo music practiced by Jean Jacques Kravetz, long-time keyboardist and rock in FRUMPY. Eventually though, 8 DAYS IN APRIL became a band of four core members and two special guests. Udo Lindenberg was second in importance next to Kravetz, writing and singing the vocals, plus composing much of the music. Steffi Stephan, playing bass, and Thomas Kretzschmer, playing guitars (with, sometimes, an astonishing freshness), joined the musicianship. The piece "I'd Like To Be A Child Again", though presumptively the most shining piece in the album, is mainly arranged by vocalist Inga Rumpf, also notorious in some of FRUMPY's experiences. Originally called "Kravetz" (given the promoter), the band finally adopted the name 8 DAYS IN APRIL, and their 1972 album was tag-titled The Hamburg Scene. Both names can be considered suggestive, since the ensemble recorded in Hamburg, and the album was, most likely, an 8 days rock work.

The Hamburg Scene smashes a lot of hard classic rock mints, but also has a prog rock definite taste. Close to being purely (and purifying) instrumental, much of the music's contrasts evolve from lyrical and euphonic passages to striking and overly produced climaxes. 8 DAYS IN APRIL clearly play a blending rock of artistic and popular forms, with smaller influences of fuzzy rhythms, jazzy branding or complex emotions and frets. The entire concept, project and music relief of 8 DAYS IN APRIL is definitely of a bit spontaneous kind, nevertheless its improvisation is worthwhile, since it's a good and recommend prog rock band, up the rarity shelve.

Uma banda que toca o passado para encontrar o futuro. Pode parecer bobo, mas isso é só um pouco de toda a mistura de influencias, ritmos e nomes que descrevem o som cru, divertido e dançante da Facção Caipira. A Facção nasceu em 2009, em Niterói, composto por Jan Santoro (Voz/Resonator), Daniel Leon (Gaita), Vinicius Câmara (Baixo) e Renan Carriço (Bateria), com a simples intenção de tocar o que gosta e cantar o que quiser. A Facção Caipira se destaca justamente pelo seu jeito despretensioso de fazer pop, indo ao passado para ilustrar o futuro, brincando de fazer o blues parecer menos complexo e o country mais acessível. É o rock britânico, com influência do Alabama e perfomance à brasileira.

This two CD set features a complete show from the 1977 Animals tour (aka 'In The Flesh' tour).  It's notable for it's very good performance and the rare encore of  'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' --a song that hadn't been played for a few years at that time, and has never ever been played since then. It's an audience recording, but of such good quality that this show has been bootlegged many times under many different titles:  'Oakland Coliseum,' 'Animal Instincts,' 'Plays the Animals,' ‘Mr. Pig,’ and 'In The Flesh' are among the most popular and common boots.  I’m including artwork for each of these so you can use what you like – it’s all from the same show.  My original CD copy was “Plays the Animals,” but last year I was given “Animal Instincts rev B,” and its sound is definitely superior, which is the source for this particular posting.

A great recording of a great concert.  The band seems to be having a lot of fun (something I assume was rare during the In The Flesh Tour).  Roger and Dave laugh hysterically during the first verse of "Have a Cigar."  Roger Waters shows some real venom in 'Pigs,' and 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts VI-IX' features some outstanding jamming which cannot be heard on the original studio recording.  The overall set list is a winner too, including "Eugene" as the final encore.  David Gilmour does seem to get a little annoyed at the crowd before "Us and Them" - he tells the crowd "This one's got a quiet beginning."  “Pigs” is much more powerful (and heavier) than the studio cut, with lots of extended jamming added as well.  There is a cut in “Shine On,” probably due to a tape flip.  There are a couple of loud BOOMS during WYWH, like the microphone was dropped, so be aware of that.  Otherwise, a great, full Animals and Wish You Were Here set, with Dark Side of The Moon encores.

Eyes of Shiva - Brazil Hard Rock

O Eyes Of Shiva iniciou suas atividades em 2001 tendo como mentores os guitarristas Renato Mendes e Ricardo Gil. Depois de alguns testes foram recrutados Gustavo Boni, o vocalista André 'Anheiser' Ferrari, e finalmente fechando o grupo, Ricardo Longhi é escolhido como o baterista da banda. A Eyes of Shiva já estava formada. Já no primeiro trabalho, o álbum "Eyes Of Soul" é lançado em 2004, sendo merecidamente um sucesso em seu lançamento na terra do sol nascente, e em seguida, ganhar repercussão nas Américas e na Europa. Em 2006, a banda lançou mais um álbum, o ótimo "Deep" contando com o single "Kamisama" que trazia Andre Matos como convidado especial. Estes dois discos foram o suficiente para a curta carreira da banda.

A banda toca um rock`n`roll cru, com influências diversas desde ritmos latinos, mesclando samba, reggae, bolero e psicodelismo com letras ora bem humoradas ora poéticas, de autoria dos vocalistas Danislau e Enzo Banzo.

“Temos influência de Menudo até John Cage. Uma banda com 7 pessoas, fica difícil de falar das influências, cada um tem uma preferência e algumas coisas em comum. Itamar Assumpção é uma influência de todos, a lira paulistana dos anos 80, e coisas como Sérgio Malandro, tropicália, Luiz Caldas e tudo que rola por aí”, comenta Enzo Banzo.

Formada em 2001, a banda se formou nos tempos de faculdade, quando os integrantes estudavam na UFU (Universidade Federal de Uberlândia). De lá para cá, houve apenas uma mudança de baixista e entrou um percussionista. Além de Enzo Banzo (voz e violão) e Danislau (voz e guitarra), compõem a banda Moita Mattos (guitarra e voz), Chelo (baixo), Ricardim (barulhos, samples e teclado), Vi (bateria) e Jack (percussão). Antes de ser Porcas Borboletas, a banda tocava com um outro nome –“Pau de Bosta”– mas, “tivemos que mudar porque não dava para publicar”, comenta Ricardim. “Esse [Porcas Borboletas] é um nome que mistura sujo e limpo, leve e pesado, bonito e feio, etc.” completa.

Gravado na capital paulista, Um Carinho com os Dentes conta com a produção musical de Alfredo Bello e participações especiais de Simone Soul, Mauro Motoki (Ludov), Luiz Gayotto, Rubi, Carlos Zhimber, Marcelo Monteiro e Projeto EmCantar. A gravação do CD foi viabilizada pela Lei Municipal de Incentivo à Cultura da Prefeitura de Uberlândia-MG.

Greg Lake & Geoff Downes

Uma parceria muito legal. Greg Lake dispensa qualquer apresentação, porém vale a pena fazer uma pequena apresentação de Geoff Downes...

Geoffrey Downes (Stockport, 25 de agosto de 1952) é um tecladista inglês de rock progressivo, melhor conhecido pela sua participação no Asia e rápida passagem no Yes em 1980. Em sua rápida passagem pelo YES, ele contribuiu para o ábum DRAMA. Posteriormente, Downes reuniu-se com Steve Howe (de Yes), Carl Palmer (de Emerson, Lake & Palmer) e John Wetton (de King Crimson) para formar o Asia em 1981. A banda teve sucesso imediato com o lançamento do álbum de estréia auto intitulado em 1982, e formou a base para a carreira de Downes desde então, além de lhe render o Guiness como tecladista com a maior quantidade de teclados em um palco . Por vários anos ele foi o único membro fundador remanescente da banda. Recentemente, Downes reuniu-se com Wetton em projetos paralelos até que a formação original do Asia retornou em 2006, assim permanecendo até o presente visto que nunca anunciaram o fim da banda.  Downes também gravou vários álbuns solo e colaborou com outros artistas, incluindo Trapeze em 1991 para uma turnê e uma breve aparição no álbum Sat in Your Lap de Kate Bush. Retornou para o grupo Yes em 2011.

Com músicos dos mais diversos estilos e variadas influências culturais, já se apresentou em praticamente todos os espaços culturais da capital mineira, sendo admirada por grande parte do público belohorizontino.

Fundada pelo batera Américo Rodrigues, a banda completou seus 10 anos de estrada em 2012. Para o quarteto, o momento reflete ser a nova geração da música suingada brasileira. Hoje formada por Melvin Santhana, cantor e guitarrista, Américo Rodrigues, baterista, Marcelo Bianca, percussão e Renato Cardos, baixo. O repertório dos shows mescla sucessos de grandes intérpretes brasileiros como Luís Vagner, Jorge Benjor, Branca di Neve, Marku Ribas, Tim Maia, com as músicas autorais, “Mistura Cultural” , “É pra dançar”, “4:20” e por aí vai.

A banda `Os Opalas´ foi formada há treze anos, em São Paulo. E desde então vem fazendo várias apresentações na noite paulistana e interior, com um show contagiante, regado com muito suingue e com musicalidade extremamente brasileira.
