Groove Collective - Fusion Funk Jazz (USA)

Nearly ten years after their formation in the early-'90s New York soul-jazz scene, Groove Collective has developed into a tightly knit orchestra of highly skilled musicians full of life and danceable spirit. It's All in Your Mind is a good representation of their artistic development and, as is with any progression, Groove Collective has upped the ante just enough to ensure further progress on future records. It's All in Your Mind experiments with jazzy and spacy elements, but never veers too far to the left or right. Though the first cut, "Time Pilot," is a slow and gentle groove that initially sounds like Hooverphonic or Portishead, the band jumps right back to their rootsy Afro-beat comforts with the second track, the Fela Kuti-esque "Ransome." They dance around in techno-influenced space on "Dance With You" and even rock out on "Skye." Though it may seem as though GC bounces around a lot, they maintain their focus beautifully, drifting seamlessly from genre to genre. As well, It's All in Your Mind tests the band's technical boundaries as electronics are more prevalent than on previous records. It's All in Your Mind illustrates an evolution of sorts for the collective from their meager hip-hop/jazz beginnings to a full-on ensemble. What's more is that the Collective plays like a jazz combo, giving each player enough room to show off his considerable individual talents. There are numerous standouts on the record, but Chucho Valdes' appearance on "Stargazer" is likely the most memorable as it elevates the record to new sonic heights. Generally, It's All in Your Mind is a bit more mellow than previous recordings but a wonderful record nonetheless.

Chicago - Pop Rock (USA)

Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968 before shortening the name in 1969. The self-described “rock and roll band with horns” began writing politically charged rock music, and later moved to a softer sound, generating several hit ballads. The group had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In September 2008, Billboard ranked Chicago at number thirteen in a list of the top 100 artists of all time for Hot 100 singles chart success, and ranked them at number fifteen on the same list produced in October 2015. Billboard also ranked Chicago ninth on the list of the hundred greatest artists of all time in terms of Billboard 200 album chart success in October 2015. Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups, and one of the world's best-selling groups of all time, having sold more than 100 million records. In 1971, Chicago was the first rock act to sell out Carnegie Hall for a week.

To date, Chicago has sold over 40 million units in the U.S., with 23 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums. They have had five consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200 and 20 top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1974 the group had seven albums, its entire catalog at the time, on the Billboard 200 simultaneously. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2017, original band members Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, and James Pankow were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame for their songwriting efforts as members of the music group.

Plaid - Alternative Rock (USA)

Plaid consists of Alien Salmon (guitar/bass), Andrew Adams (bass/tenor sax/vox), Jason Scott Payton (drums/percussion) and Brannon Hancock (lead vox/electric/acoustic guitars/bass/sax). 'Understanding God', Plaid's debut release for Rustproof, is both well produced and arranged; where Derri Daugherty (The Choir), who co-produced the album along with Paul Sallo and Mark Q, leaves a subtle but by no means overbearing influence on the proceedings, allowing the band's over all sound to be enhanced rather than compromised. Plaid play a modern hybrid of alternative hard rock, showcasing some of the finest thought-provoking and challenging lyrics; passionately delivered by Brannon. Overall, the band are an extremely tight unit; although in certain places the drums are not quite up to speed. Rather than detracting from the overall sound, however, this adds an extra live feel to the proceedings. An excellent album from a group destined to make big waves in the future.

Camarones Orquestra Guitarrística - Alternative Surf Rock (Brazil)

The sound of Camarones is instrumental dance rock, with a lot of punch always mixing elements of surf music, Brazilian rhythms and Ska. Formed by the musicians Ana Morena (bass), Anderson Foca (guitar), Yves Fernandes (Drums) and Alexandre Capilé (guitar). The Camarones Guitar Orchestra is known as one of the most active independent groups in the country.

PAIDARION - Crossover Prog • Finland

Formed in 2006,some members from the groups Mist Season and Progression have participated in the Paidarion-project. Although Paidarion's music is related to Mist Season, it relies more on rock and ballads with progressive themes. Their new album. Haurus Silta, has been mixed by the Finnish Prog Legend, Tommi Liuhala (who ever since the 70's has worked with for ex. Wigwam, Kalevala and Haikara). Hauras Silta-CD contains 12 melodic songs from different situations in life. All the texts are written by Pirkko Salhi. The music could be described as folk/crossover prog/gospel with country influences. The instrumental parts of experienced musicians color the vocal parts of Kristina Johnson and Jari Markkula with many kinds of lights and shadows. Great soundscapes and moody atmospheres lend an eclectic feel to the music also.

Red Rodney - Jazz (Trumpet)

From 1976-79, trumpeter Red Rodney recorded three LPs with altoist Richie Cole that otherwise mostly used different lineups of musicians. This excellent outing (which also includes tenor saxophonist David Schnitter, pianist Barry Harris, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Leroy Williams) has a bit of a jam session feel to it. Cole contributed "Starburst" and "Red Rodney Rides Again"; the trio plays Rodney's "Helene," and the full group romps on "Out of Nowhere," "All the Things You Are" and "Bluebird." By 1977, Rodney's chops were back in prime form, and his mastery of bebop (along with the colorful Cole's) is obvious in these recordings. Worth searching for.

Brother Fox & The Tar Baby - Psychedelic Rock (USA)

Boston's Brother Fox and the Tar Baby featured the talents of former Profits and The Front Page Review guitarist Richie Bartlett, Pugsley Munion bassist Tom Belliveau, guitarist Dave Christiansen, drummer Bill Garr, singer Steve High. and keyboardist Joe Santangelo.  One of the era's isolated multi-racial bands, the group were signed by the small Oracle label, which released 1969's Bruce Patch produced "Brother Fox and the Tar Baby".  Christiansen was credited with penning all eleven tracks, the result being an odd hodge-podge of musical styles.

Quite diverse, the set included stabs at conventional hard rock ('We All Love Him'), ballads ('I Start To Cry') and the plain bizarre ('Maxie the Meanie').  The first couple of times I listened to the album I'll readily admit to being a little under whelmed, but repeated spins saw me start to warm up to the collection. To my ears the highlights included 'Metal Soldier', 'Three Tots and a Man and their most psych-oriented track 'Mr. Sleepy'. (The album was original released in a gatefold sleeve.)

Barbara & Ernie - Folk Rock, Soul, Psychedelic

Soul singer Barbara Massey and jazz guitarist Ernie Calabria paired up for this rare 1971 album. With Calabria having worked with Nina Simone and Harry Belafonte, among others, and Massey having sung backup for artists including Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, and Herbie Hancock, the pairing was an inspired one and resulted in this superb soul-jazz outing. Massey has a dry yet passionate and evocative vocal quality that often brings to mind Grace Slick. Fittingly, the duo takes on Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love," turning the Summer of Love anthem into a steamy and hypnotic soul-funk jam. Elsewhere, the duo touches upon such varying styles as folk, Latin, and psychedelic rock with cuts like "For You" and "Do You Know?," bringing to mind such similarly inclined acts as the Free Design and Bill Withers. Anyone who has even a passing interest in this kind of '70s cross-genre aesthetic will certainly want to seek out Prelude To....

Paul Lamb & The Detroit Breakdown - Blues Rock (USA)

Detroit. Few words draw up such emotion and imagery as that one word sentence. It’s really a novel on its own, and it says more about music than most books ever could. One of the things most people forget in this modern era of music is the deep root of blues that comes from Detroit. One man who hasn’t is Paul Lamb and his band The Detroit Breakdown. Paul grew up in Detroit, listening to a mix of great rock radio like Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and drew from other outside influences like Hendrix and Stevie Ray as he began to play guitar. After travelling the country seeking out his musical soul and playing with the best of the best, Paul has finally found what he was looking for right here at home. Listening to Paul Lamb and the Detroit Breakdown is a musical time capsule. It will take you through the drive and riffs of the 70’s, but also has the modern pulse that comes from recording at the legendary Rust Belt Studios(Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker) that keeps it all fresh. He’s not rehashing a memory, he’s brought this music to life. After extensively touring Europe, highlighted by appearances at Glastonbury and touring with Walter Trout, Peter Green and many others, Paul and the Detroit Breakdown are bringing their music back home, similar to the path Hendrix followed. It all comes back around, much like it does with music and Detroit. Paul carries the torch as well as any native from this great city could ever do.

Adam Feust:  Rhythm Guitar, Back Up Vocals
