Zebrabeat - Instrumental Afrobeat & Brazilian Rhythms (Brazil)

The band Zebrabeat presented the project of the group that mixes afrobeat with regional rhythms. The group consists of Júnior Gurgel (drums), Príamo Brandão (bass), Leo Chermont (guitar), JP (percussion), Dan Bordallo (keyboard), Stefano Manfrin (sax) and Davi Amorim (guitar). The band, which was formed approximately eight months ago, focuses on research and collection of sound materials from the Amazonian and African universes. According to Junior Gurgel, "ideas came up in the studio itself, in the composition process," he commented during the show. The group also talked about their influences, among them Fela Kuti, and made the sound mix with songs full of groove. Among them, "African Police Officer", "Deu Zebra" and "Vieirando".

From an experimental mix, the Zebrabeat Afro-Amazônia Orchestra re-signifies traditional Pará music such as carimbó and guitarrada, which receives strong influences from Caribbean music, by hybridizing it to Afrobeat, African rhythm created by Fela Kuti in Nigeria in the decade of 70. The result of the mix is an instrumental musicality percussive of easy appreciation anywhere in the world, but it does not lose its roots of regional music, both Amazonian and African. Amidst so many instruments and mixed melodies, sometimes in uniqueness, sometimes in a more chaotic way, the only certainty when listening to the Zebrabeat is the desire to hit the little foot, to shake the neck and to move the body.

In October 2013 the band released their first album titled "Zebrabeat". The disc contains 8 tracks, one of the tracks counts with the participation of the Master Laurentino in "Valley of San Fernando". "Fisher of Fragments" is also due to the voice and presence of the great bass player Mg Caliber. The compositions, arrangements and production of the disc are by the drummer Júnior Gurgel.

Also in 2013 the band was invited to participate in the Festival Se Rasgum and Terruá Pará, a project that disseminates Pará music and culture through shows that took place in Belém and São Paulo. Already in the year 2014 Zebrabeat begins a tour between Rio and São Paulo. With touring venues, pubs and public events the tour helped the band to create public not only in Pará but in other regions of Brazil and even abroad, where the songs are played on the radios.
Recently the band was featured in a concert held at Circo Voador in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Residing in São Paulo, the band keeps on going and doing shows.
