Enine - Neo Prog (Russia)

The Great Silent by Russian band Enine has been recorded as if it was the soundtrack to 3 great silent movies ''Metropolis'', ''Frankenstein'' and ''Nosferatu''. Not surprisingly this has not given us an album that sounds modern, but it's not vintage to the point of sounding like music of the early 20th century. In fact the early seventies would be a better reference.

Consisting of eight instrumentals varying in lenght from less than one minute to more than sixteen, the music is dominated by the keyboards and guitars of Vladimir Mikhailov and Ilya Frolov.

If I were to pick a band to make references with it would be Camel (circa The Snow Goose). Since the inspiration of the music are horror and anticipation films, the music is darker and in good part more intense than Camel's, but I can imagine they would have given us something not so far from The Great Silent if they had recorded a similar project.

The Great Silent is an album that I have enjoyed from beginning to end. All the tracks are good but for me ''Nosferatu'' is the highlight of this very good record.

I may just try watching one of these movies while listening to The Great Silent...

Vladimir Mikhailov - guitar
Ilya Frolov - keyboards
Vladimir Nikonov - drums, jaw harp
Vladimir Kosygin - bass, shamanic drum, voices
Stanislav Tregubov - flute, djembe
