Between 1973 and 1978 Shadows drummer and budding orchestra leader/composer Brian Bennett recorded a slew of instrumentals for the music library label KPM. The tracks were subscription-based and coveted by television companies who paid a relative pittance for programming use. Compared to the significantly higher price doled out to commission composers, arrangers, and orchestras to score each individual episode, KPM's grab bag of funk, disco, easy listening, and instrumental pop was a steal, and the diversity and surprisingly high quality of the material made placement a cinch. RPM's Aim High compiles 20 commercially unreleased cuts from Bennett's prolific KPM years into a faux television soundtrack that conjures up glorious images of '70s small-screen wonders like CHiPs, Kojak, and The Love Boat. Bennett's skillful execution and boundless creativity omits that notion that any of these are toss-offs, rather they exist in some kind of sideburn vortex where cops are still jumping over city fences in pursuit of hippie purse snatchers and where brown vans carrying pimply teens are barreling through the streets of San Francisco in a cloud of pot smoke. All this is to be expected with song titles like "Boogie Juice" and "Keep Truckin'," but Bennett's no one-trick pony. Somewhere between the Morricone-meets-Mancini groove of "Reflections on a Misty Morning," the "Tubular Bells" knockoff "Glass Tubes," and the sweet melancholic "Sunset" -- the latter wouldn't seem out of place in a Wes Anderson film -- Brian Bennett the composer lives up to his occupational title.

Vertigo Angels - Alternative Rock (UK)
Vertigo Angels was a three-piece band fronted by Melanie Garside. They released one album called Eradicate Apathy in 2003, which, according to Mel, is being re-released late 2008.
The ever increasingly talented Maple Bee unleashes the harshest of her myriad of musical excursions with the Vertigo Angels 3 piece band. This album enjoyed all of 3 weeks release originally before the production and management company went bankrupt and the album became entangled in ownership problems. Due to fans relentless requests Xie has taken up the battle and won and here it is …
Melanie Garside, aka Maple Bee, is a multi-talented lady. She's started up a lot of projects since her first band, Tabitha Zu, burst on to the scene in the mid-ninties. These include playing bass in her sister's band, Queen Adreena, making music with the classical artists, the the Mediaeval Babes, as well as two (very different!) solo albums. And then there's this little gem. The Vertigo Angels, fronted by Maple bee, have a rather special sound - a little bit Garbage, a bit PJ Harvey, a bit Mazzy Star, but, at the same time, completley other. I put this down to Maple bee's very distinctive voice - stong, smooth, glassy & melodic. It makes every track absolutley stunning. The music harkens back to Maple's Tabitha Zu days - guitars & unusual sounds. But there's something else here. Something that makes this album feel very, very special. That there will never be another quite like this. Maple Bee has a habit of moving on after completing a project. The Vertigo Angels do appear to be now defunct. Which is a great shame. The solo project that followed this was beautiful. I believe she is currently recording with the the mediaeval babes. Maybe one day she'll come back & record some more Vertigo Angels. Or maybe she'll won't. Needless to say that whatever projects she goes into in the future, she'll make

Larry Coryell's 11th House - Jazz Fusion
The final recording by legendary jazz fusion pioneers Larry Coryell and Alphonse Mouton in the reformed the Eleventh House in their all new album Seven Secrets which will be released on June 2nd. The late guitarist Coryell assembled founding members Randy Brecker (trumpet), long-timer John Lee (bass), the addition of son Julian (guitar) and the late Alphonse Mouzon (drums) to bring the rock and funk back to jazz again with a batch of eleven powerhouse tracks. The album is truly a group effort with Coryell relying on each member to contribute compositions to the new album (much like he did back in the 70 s).
In January, he went into a studio in St. Augustine, Florida, and recorded a new Eleventh House project titled Seven Secrets (Savoy/429 Records) with charter members from 1973: Randy Brecker on trumpet and Alphonse Mouzon (1948 2016) on drums, along with John Lee (bassist on the group s 1975 album Level One and 1976 follow-up, Aspects) and Coryell s son Julian, a six-string shredder in his own right, on second guitar.
The results, which will be released in June, are electrifying. Fueled by Mouzon s big-as-a-house back-beats and power-precision fills, Daddy Coryell cuts loose with sheer abandon on several cuts, like his Mr. Miyake and Mouzon s kinetic 7/4 title track. Coryell deals in audacious string-bending on the blues-rocker The Dip and the earthy Mudhen Blues, and delivers some Wes Montgomery-style octaves on the mellow Having Second Thoughts.
But the real killer on Seven Secrets is Lee s Dragon s Way, a 6/8 romp that will whet the appetites of true fusion fans. Sparked by Mouzon s slamming groove and Lee s slippery, singing tones on his resounding Rob Allen fretless bass (with ebony fingerboard and nylon strings), this catchy number also showcases the young Julian s mondo chops, which are coming directly out of the Steve Vai Joe Satriani school. Papa Coryell follows those mind-blowing fusillades with something simple, lyrical, tasty and blue a typically Zen response from the guitar master.
EDITH - Neo-Prog • Italy
Edith biography (http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=592)
Mellow Records seems to be a focal point for Italian Neo bands of the '90s. This is especially true if they are of the obscure nature. EDITH is a prime example of this. They may not be completely unknown, but concerning the band itself, there isn't much information to be found.
Drummer Biagio Bisignani, singer Mario Gulisano, guitarist Antonio Moschetto, and bass player Giovanni Scaccianoce got together, and recorded "...A Space Between Ever and Never..." with help on keyboards from Salvo Fiorentino, in 1989. The debut was a rough start. It fell into the Neo realm, but was very reliant on AOR. At this point, they hadn't truly found their sound. The second album, 1991's "Ice," saw a vast improvement. The band was now also comfortable in its Neo-prog shoes.
By 1993, there were shakeups in the band. Franco Baressi replaced Biagio Bisignani on drums, and keyboard player Tony Brundo was added. The third album, "Dreams," became their most solid effort, and was released by Mellow Records. Giovanni Scaccianoce also used this opportunity to utilize a Chapman Stick. Aside from a 1995 live release, "Dreams" was the band's last effort.
As I said before, there is not much information out there concerning EDITH. However, Mario Gulisano has been quite active. Since EDITH, he has worked in the ambient bands Blue and Atmo, a folk band called Sarabanda, and is currently involved in an ethno-world project called Nirmegh. He is also the founder and manager of Darshan, a non-profit organization that produces music festivals in Sicily. Gulisano is much inspired by his Sicilian roots, and says that has always been part of his music.
La Chinga - Hard Rock (Canada)
La Chinga is a stoner boogie power trio sitting on the world’s edge in Vancouver, Canada. Drawing from Sabbath, Zep, the MC5 and their own superbad habits, La Chinga has established a penetrating buzz across Canadian campus radio. Selfreleased in 2013, the band’s debut self-titled album prompted ecstatic reviews from the kind of people who wonder why they don’t make ’em like this anymore.
“With their electric black magic unleashed and in full flight, they bonded with the children of the forest over Cro-Magnon riffage, pounding drums, banshee wails, bell bottoms, boogie vans and the sweet miracle of tequila. Through sheer stoopidity, brutality, violence and volume they honed their primordial craft into a sonic axe of stone, opening skulls with deadly precision for as far as the pterodactyl flew.” (from: La Chinga Biography)

Dirty Sweet - Rock (USA)
Formed in 2003, Dirty Sweet found an immediate audience of rock-loving fans just months after their inception, touring as main support for Jimmy Eat World. Their reputation spread further when British magazine NME referred to the group as, "The mighty Dirty Sweet," and declared the band was, "getting ready to go mega with their skuzzy, ass-shaking rawk n' roll." Winning the award for Best New Rock & Roll Band at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards, as well as their tireless performances to packed houses further encouraged the group to begin recording their debut. And here it is ...
Birdy Nam Nam - Electronic Jazz (France)
Birdy Nam Nam are a DJ crew from France. Birdy Nam Nam has won several prizes throughout their career including the DMC Technics 2002 World TEAM Championships. Birdy Nam Nam's goal is to use the turntable player as an actual musical instrument. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2006 on Uncivilized World Records, and in March of that year, they performed at the internationally renowned music conference SXSW. The group's name is taken from a line in the 1968 Peter Sellers film The Party, directed by Blake Edwards. They gain their music from friends, owned albums, and press beats and patterns into vinyl to assemble their music live. In 2010, the band won the Electronic or Dance revelation of the year at the Victoires de la Musique. In 2012 they got a wider audience in the Anglophone world thanks to Skrillex. At the Festival des Artefacts in Strasbourg, Skrillex played after Birdy Nam Nam and was impressed.[2] He decided to remix their song Goin' In multiple times and to release a remix album of BNN songs on his label OWSLA.
Debademba - World Folk Music (Africa)
Debademba is back, ready to set and set the mood everywhere in his passage of his West African grooves feverish! At the head of the group, the two accomplices, locomotives of this ultravitaminated mixture: Abdoulaye Traoré, virtuoso Burkinabe guitarist, as at ease in the African rhythms as in blues-rock or flamenco, and the Ivorian-Malian singer Mohamed Diaby , to the golden voice of griot, powerful and high pitched. Settled in Paris, in the district of Belleville, "where everything started for Debademba", they draw on the musical wealth of the continent, from Côte d'Ivoire to northern Mali through Cameroon and Burkina. But Debademba, which means "the big family" in Bambara, is not content to make the crowds dance: they broadcast pacifist messages of fraternity and friendship through their music. For this third album, they pay homage to the "Sanikoya", a secular tradition of West Africa that maintained peace between families and ethnic groups, a tradition that tends to disappear today. Before flying to Benin, the two friends confided in Point Africa.

Dead Hippies - Punk Rock (USA)
Lead vocalist Simon Smallwood was the frontman of Dead Hippie when they were mentioned in the Spin magazine after the album was released in 1983 and a photo of those times on the MySpace page showed other band members such as guitarist Mike Hagen, drummer Paul Mars (also Paul Black , and in fact - Paul Martin Marmorstein) and bassist / synthesizer Bob Mann. The pianists Jacqueline Fritz and Debra Exit also appear in the photos with the band, and the latest one, dated 1985, shows the already named Simon Smallwood and Bob Mann, as well as Robert Williams and Mike Dewey. It seems that the latter is the same person as Big Mike D, who also has a page on MySpace, where he tells about his participation in the band Dead Hippie. Another keyboardist Bob Friedman (Bob Friedman) also has messages on the Internet saying that he played for a short time with this band.
However, all these late members had nothing to do with the only album Dead Pulse Records released on the obscure label Pulse Records, one of the few punk rock bands that cultivated the genre-long long instrumental passages in songs that were moving in completely unexpected directions. Instrumentals or just long introductions before singing at one time practically disappeared from rock for several decades, and in the approach to music that is used in punk rock, they hardly ever existed at all. And the performance style of Dead Hippie is recognized by some bloggers-reviewers rather theatrical and even dramatic, which is mainly due to the singing of the frontman, and the estimates of how Simon Smallwood sings vary from "awfully good" to blind copying of Arthur Brown in his work " Crazy World "(remember the famous song" Fire "!). But there are a lot of those who believe that now, unfortunately, the already deceased Simon Smallwood had a rather fascinating voice, and it was possible to see epithets like "great", "terribly strange" and "funny" under some of his photographs.
After the demise of Dead Hippie, little later Simon Smallwood joined the punk rock band Würm, also from the City of Angels, whose style of play is classified as "sludge metal", originally active from 1973 to 1977; Smallwood was in the group in the short period of the end of 1985. On the Internet, you can still find a few videos, where Simon Smallwood in 1991, performs with the group TuTu Band from Portland.

Lincoln St. Exit - Heavy Psychedelic Rock (USA)
Lincoln Street Exit's sole album is one of those efforts that's generated considerable attention throughout the collecting community over the years. Formed in 1964, the original line up consisted of Paul Chapman, drummer Lee Herres, singer/guitarist Michael Martin and bassist Mac Suazo. A rarity in that it was one of the few mid-1960s native American rock bands (all four members were New Mexico Sioux) to actively tour and record, the group struggled for six years with little recognition; managing to release three instantly obscure singles during that timeframe.
By the time the band was signed to the Detroit-based Mainstream label, Chapman had died replaced by guitarist R.C. Gariss. Teamed with producer Brad Shad 1970's Drive It! served to showcase material from Martin and non-member Tom Bee. Sure the band's anti-war sentiments ('Man Machine' and 'Time Has Come Gonna Die') weren't particularly original or noteworthy. Similarly their isolated stab at pseudo-Gospel ('Going Back Home') was at best misguided. On the other hand, propelled by Martin's likeable voice, tracks such as 'Dirty Mother Blues,' 'Teacher Teacher' and 'Straight Shootin' Man' offered up a compelling set of blues-oriented hard rock. Ironically the most impressive track was also one of their most commercial effort - the pop-oriented 'Soulful Drifter' (which was released as an unsuccessful single). Gariss, Herrera, Martin and Suazo subsequently continued their musical collaboration, reappearing as Xit recording a series of mid-1970s LPs for Motown.
