Inventions - Symphonic/Progressive/Post Rock (Netherlands)

Far from giving up her numerous activities in groups such as, Sky Architect, Nine Stones Close and The Black Codex, Christiaan Bruin has also been trying since the beginning of the decade to escape alone, especially under the name of Chris and for his new publication "Meta" with the surname "INVENTIONS". This new album, to say the least original, "is a series of videos and songs about the creative process of composing both music and lyrics. Every two weeks, a new song will be released, + a YouTube video showing the ideas, inspiration and the recording process that led to the creation of the song.
Defricher and go further to see what is happening musically, such is the approach of Christiaan, in early September 2017. This time the multi-instrumentalist, has imposed a major challenge, revealing the face of all , his way of composing in pictures to put him then in the listening. The album is eclectic and addresses all the musical genres of rock, progressive, hovering, symphonic and sometimes even alternative. The influences of Christiaan leave, even the beautiful part, as usual, has a melodic and aerial progressive rock. In fact one can form two distinct groups, the first will group the tests planing, melancholic and etheres and the second the alternative approaches, new waves and progressives. Without analyzing each of the fifteen tracks that make up "META", we can emphasize that certain titles really pull their pin of the game.
In the first series we find, "Meta", the eponymous title of the processional and haunting opus, which is much too lengthy for my taste. "The Dream Sequence" that could almost be Tangerine Dream, originality and energy less. "Spaceship Earth" which will remind the oldest group Wapassou (I advise you "Mass in D minor"), the progressive and contemporary approach. In a slightly different register, though, "Oceania" is obviously eyeing Enya.
In the second battalion, compositions like "One And The Same" and "The Turing Test" give rise to mid-tempos in an alternative register, but played with finesse, accessible compositions that fly away thanks to an unstoppable chorus, a trend already noticeable on Chris's solo wafers. "One Small Step" exploit a niche close to O.M.D (Orchestral Man In the Dark), which I just heard the latest album "The Punishment of Luxury" which by the way is really very good. "A Place Where We Belong" walks in the footprints and climates of Mike Batt, with real success.
Christiaan Bruin took the time necessary for the maturation and the very particular elaboration of this album. The fifteen inventive compositions are tasted until more thirsty!
