SAENA - Symphonic Prog • Mexico

SAENA is one of the most recent wonders that have come out to the world of symphonic rock. Founded in Mexico by lifelong musical partners JOSE LUIS FERNANDEZ LEDESMA and Margarita BOTELLO, SAENA gathers five experienced and skillful musicians whose separate résumés are rooted in the areas of academic music, progressive rock, theatre soundtracks and fusion. All other three musicians have collaborated in FERNÁNDEZ LEDESMA's albums at one point or another.

The band took its name from one track in FERNÁNDEZ LEDESMA's "Designios" (his most symphonic-oriented album, an oddity among his predominantly RIO-inspired discography). SAENA's music is essentially symphonic, yet instilling elements of fusion and chamber-rock in such a cordial manner that they add richness instead of contrast to the core sound. Among the abundant keyboard layers and guitar ornaments, it is the violin that usually assumes the leading role during the instrumental excursions. Compositionally speaking, the material is rich enough in terms of finesse and feeling as to sustain the expansions generated by the musicians' interactions.

To a degree, influences from YES, GENTLE GIANT and PFM are noticeable, but SAENA has promptly come up with a symphonic style of its own. In its few dark moments the band seems to slightly flirt with UNIVERS ZERO. The band's fusion leanings will also make them appealing to those who already love AMAROK, KOTEBEL and the softer side of compatriot band CABEZAS DE CERA.

Muchas Gracias Magal...
