Papa Chango - Afrobeat Funk Downtempo (Melbourne)

Subterranean trance-like movements of afro-beat mashed-up with psychedelic guitars and scatterings of broken brass is the order and Papa Chango delivers like no other. Unique within the thriving Melbourne scene they take it to its gritty-edge, melding technique with original thought. This Melbourne based 9-piece packs dance-floors bringing audiences to a sweat and evoking a hidden spirit within.

Recorded at Melbourne’s home of funk and soul, Hope Street Studios (The Cactus Channel, Bombay Royale,) Papa Chango’s The Matador is the soundtrack to ”the film yet to be filmed.” Inspired by 70’s ethio-jazz and afro-funk sounds, The Matador will take you on a sonic journey over barren plains and rugged terrain, all the while ensuring your feet don’t leave the dancefloor. For this release, Papa Chango have forgone the use of vocals entirely, instead using guitars, drums, percussion and Farfisa organ to provide the foundation, and a four-piece horn section to colour the landscape. These elements combine to present a “Morricone meets Mulatu” type experience to the listener. Within a month of its release, The Matador has garnered praise globally, with tracks being included on a number of compilations (Paris DJs: Bag of Goodies Vol 8; Paris DJs: 21st Century Afro Spectacular) and was PBS feature album the week of it’s release, (The Matador: PBS Feature Album.)
