Protofonia - Instrumental Jazz Prog (Brazil)

PROTOFONIA is a trio of instrumental music, a laboratory, a safe place where labels can be stripped: a blank canvas and three brushes, endless colors. Protophony agrees with everything related to experimentalism and improvisation: Free Music! Formed at the height of Brasilia's drought in 2007, Andre Chayb (guitar, ukelele, theremin, keyboard, noise), Janari Coelho (drums, percussion, landscapes and sound interventions, noise) and Andre Gurgel (bass, guitar, keyboard, plastics, Noises), all with vast experience in the music scene of the Federal District, work with very influential instrumental music of jazz in all its aspects, blues, progressive rock, free improvisation, contemporary classical and electroacoustic music. In developing their themes there is always room for explosion and silence, creating bold colors and unpredictable textures that catch the attention of the audience from beginning to end of each song.

Protofonia, in addition to participating in several local shows and festivals, acted by designing the soundtrack of the musical Macufagia, Macunaima's rereading, masterpiece by writer Mario de Andrade, directed by Uruguayan director Hugo Rodas. The experience paved the way for the trio's foray into songwriting and soundtracking, in partnership with performing and visual arts groups. This first album brings together compositions that started to be recorded in 2008, when the group established itself as a trio after a sequence of several formations (it became a quintet, with two drums, two guitars and bass). The tracks Modern Anthropophagy, Riding the Flexible Machine, Doce Carne and Jardim de Maytrea were recorded at Octogono Studio in 2008. In 2009, at C.L. Audio, were recorded Eugenia, Tell Nothing to Your Sister, Waste Shredder and On Stage Behind the Eyes. That same year the group broke up. The members followed their individual projects and only met again in 2012. New compositions emerged, but there was still that shelved project. Although the tracks still sound quite raw and unfinished, the high quality of the capture motivated the continuation of the process. The material was taken to the Zimmer-Collen studio, where in two months some soil overdubs, electroacoustic effects insertions, noise, flutes, theremin, percussion, mixing and mastering were made. The first album "Protofonia" was finalized in April 2013.

Recorded and Mixed in 2014/2015 at the studio Zimmer-Collen (Ceilandia / DF) by Oldair Vieira (Dei), Produced by Pedro Baldanza, legendary Brazilian rock bassist, member of the Som Nosso de Cada Dia group. Analog mastering by Dudu Maia at Casa do Som Studio (Brasilia / DF), pressed in 300 copies of 180g by Polysom (RJ) with the art of Eduardo Belga on the cover.
