Sonny Stitt With Zimbo Trio ‎– In Brasil With Zimbo Trio (Latin Jazz)

Zimbo Trio (Brazilian Latin Jazz Band), was invited to be the support group for the veteran American saxophonist on his Brazilian tour. The result is what can be expected from a meeting of this order, a repertoire based on standards of jazz, bossa nova, bebop and saxophone originals. Stitt was perhaps the saxophonist with sonority and phrasing more akin to the bop icon, Charlie Parker. Not that it meant he was just an emulator of Bird's sound at all. Sonny has always been criticized for this fact and has repeatedly stated that when he first heard Parker, still with Bird playing in Jay McShan's orchestra, he had such a scary look. Sonny Stitt was a few years older than Bird and was a musician started even in the swing period. He became one of bebop's heavy names, recording some important records with none other than Dizzy Gillespie, the other co-founder of the style alongside Parker. Despite my admiration for both Stitt and Zimbo, on this album it is noted that while the first flows the phrasing of the aesthetics of the bop, Zimbo gets somewhat tied in a swing aesthetic. Nothing that makes the album a mistake. Amilton Godoy seems to be more at ease thanks to the influence of an Oscar Peterson in his style, Luiz Chaves and Rubinho do not show much intimacy with the characteristic of the rhythmic accents of the bop, especially in working with the bass drum and the box and the lines of the walking bass But these are details only perceived by the ears of the already initiated, for a more general public the disc is a pleasant session of jazz with musicians of high jig in their respective aesthetics. To regret even is the bad pressing of the vinyl, a common fact in the products of the former Continental and a strange mix for those accustomed to the standard Rudy Van Gelder. Noves outside, a historical meeting of great Brazilian musicians and an important name in jazz saxophone.
