The Skatalites - Groove Ska Reggae (Jamaica)
More than a band, the Skatalites were and are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn't merely define the sound of Jamaica, they were the sound of Jamaica across the '50s and '60s. Although the group existed in its original incarnation for less than 18 months, members brought their signature styles to hundreds upon hundreds of the island's releases. The Skatalites officially lined up as guitarist Jerome "Jah Jerry" Hinds, bassist Lloyd Brevett, teenaged pianist Donat Roy "Jackie" Mittoo, drummer Lloyd Knibbs, trumpeter Johnnie "Dizzie" Moore, Cuban-born tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook, alto saxophonists Lester Sterling and Cuban born Roland Alphonso, and trombonist Don Drummond. Moore, McCook, Sterling, and Drummond were all alumni of the Alpha Cottage School for Boys, an educational institution for troubled and troublesome boys in Kingston, run by the Catholic diocese. Besides the regular lashings of studies, the school was renowned for its music program, and over the years turned hundreds of wayward boys into performers of note. All four ended up playing the hotel circuit, churning out R&B and jazz covers for the tourists.
Ball of Fire finds a reunited Skatalites reworking their greatest hits, playing long, extended passages that allow the band to demonstrate their substantial instrumental abilities. Fans of the punchy early singles may find this approach a little unsettling, but anyone who gets into the groove will find Ball of Fire to be a delight, a thoroughly respectable comeback from one of ska's greatest groups.

Doom Side Of The Moon (Kyle Shutt)
This album holds The Sword's guitarist Kyle Shutt at the driving wheel with a myriad of other musicians such as bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Santiago Vela III, also of The Sword, along with vocalist Alex Marrero (Brownout, Brown Sabbath), saxophonist Jason Frey (Black Joe Lewis, Hard Proof), and keyboardist Joe Cornetti (Croy & The Boys). Engineered and mixed byStuart Sikes (White Stripes, Rocket From The Crypt). Before we jump in, I feel it is fitting to mention that similar to Marilyn Manson's inspiration for a "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" cover, Shutt felt inclined to record a heavier version of this album after some substance consumption.

Founded in Wuppertal, Germany in 1970 - Disbanded in 1980 - Reformed from 2005-2009
This, in my opinion, underrated German progressive rock band has its roots in '63 when the brothers Joachim and Christian Grumbkow founded the rock-band The BEATKIDS and played covers from The BEATLES, The ROLLING STONES and The SHADOWS. In november '70 the brothers GRUMBKOW presented the name HÖLDERLIN (derived from a German romantic poet) after they had played with a sery of musicians mainly folk-rock covers (especially TRAFFIC), all layered with long instrumental improvisations. Then HÖLDERLIN got an invitation from a record company, this after only three months of their existence! The debut-album "Hölderlin's Traum" was released in '72 with a nine-piece line up, including female vocals and instruments like the Mellotron, Grand piano, violin, cello, sitar, tablas and flute. Their sound is a progressive blend of rock, jazz and folk. It sold 5000 copies and the LP is still a collector's item. But then the troubles began with their producer Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser (TANGERINE DREAM, KLAUS SCHULZE and WALLENSTEIN). He tried to force the band into a more cosmic approach ('LSD' inspired complained the band) and was not amused with the "more political oriented lyrics" as he analyzed.
It took almost three years with many juridical conflicts to get rid off the contract but eventually HÖLDERLIN won their case. Under the new name HOELDERLIN (in German the pronunciation of "oe" is the same as the "ö" and much easier to write or type) the second eponymous LP was released in 75. The band called their music 'romantic rock', it sounded more jazzy and it contained echoes from KING CRIMSON and GENESIS. HOELDERLIN toured through Scandinavia, Holland, Germany and Switzerland, got good reviews and radio - and tv-airplay. In '76 HOELDERLIN released the album entitled "Clowns and Clouds". The music consists of more complex rock with many theatrical and surrealistic elements. In '77 Christian had a mental breakdown, he could no longer combine the too busy work with the band and his family life (the upbringing of two children). He left and Spanish guitar player Pablo Weeber joined HOELDERLIN. In '77 they released the album "Rare Birds", a year later followed by the 2-LP "Hoelderlin Live Traumstadt". Soon after the unstable personality of Pablo led to his dismiss. "Traumstadt" got very good reviews, it even reached the German charts. Further releases were "New Faces" ('79) and "Fata Morgana" ('81), including new drummer Eduard Schicke, know from the progrock trio SCHICKE, FUHRS, FRÖHLING. These albums have a more accessible melodic rock approach.
The double-album "Hoelderlin Live Traumstadt" is their finest work and showcases the band at their pinnacle. It's still considered as one of the milestones in the German rock history and has some similarities with other German progrock band GROBSCHNITT concerning the long solos, visual effects, costumes and humor. The music was recorded in the Wuppertaler Opernhaus in October '77, the 2-LP was released in '78. The band was hit by multiple changes in the line-up, on "Traumstadt" the musicians were Joachim Grumbkow (keyboards and vocals on "Streaming"), Pablo Weeber (all guitars), Michael Bruchmann (drums), Cristoph 'Nops' Noppeney (lead vocals and violin) and Hans Bäär (bass). All the nine melodic tracks have their own climate and features fluid accelerations, nice interludes, pleasant keyboards (string-ensemble, electric piano, organ and clavinet) and great interplay between electric guitar and violin. But the focus is on the solo work: fiery ("Sun Rays"), biting ("Soft Landing") and howling ("Die Stadt") on the electric guitar and exciting ("Streaming") and spectacular ("Die Stadt") on the violin. Many solos are supported by the wonderful and distinctive sound of the string-ensemble, a compelling combination! Recommended, especially to the fans of the violin play of Jean Luc PONTY and Eddie JOBSON.
Nico Gomez & His Afro Percussion Inc. - Afro Latin Funk (Belgium)
Nico Gomez is a Belgian writer/composer who is famous for his Latin-American sounds. He conducted the famous Nico Gomez Orchestra and also wrote for Los Chakachas, another well known Belgian group. “Ritual” recorded in the early 70s in Belgium its a tasty batch of Latin funk grooves, with a deep Afro-soul sound thrown into the mix, and some slight Chicano rock touches, like fuzzy guitar and heavy organ.
It includes fantastic funk versions of two Perez Prado groovers “Caballo Negro” and “Lupita“the latter of which is the monster dance floor mash up but the whole album really rocks.
Belgium is not the first place you d think of when it comes to Latin or Afro-funk. Yet, one of the greatest records to blend both styles came from the small northern European country, masterminded by Nico Gomez and his Afro Percussion Inc. Ritual was originally released in 1971 on the Dutch label Omega International and is now reissued by Mr Bongo, bringing its blazing funk grooves to new ears and those already tuned in to this masterpiece s legacy. Across its 11 tracks Ritual delivers the kind of production, arrangement, and musicianship that rightfully belong in a dictionary next to the definition of professional. Gomez s band was tight and they knew it, showing it off on their covers of Perez Prado s Caballo Negro and Lupita by injecting the originals with a deep funk that blends both Afro and Latin influences.
Pepe DeLuxé - Trip Hop Downtempo Grooves (Finland)
Pepe Deluxé is a Finnish electronic music oriented band, formed in 1996 by DJ Slow (Vellu Maurola) JA-Jazz (Tomi Castrén, formerly Paajanen) and James Spectrum (Jari Salo) in Helsinki, Finland. They started to experiment with sounds of hip hop, big beat, breakbeat and downtempo. With the 2007 release Spare Time Machine the band gave up on sampling and concentrated on vintage music styles including Psychedelia, Baroque Pop and Surf Rock.[1] DJ Slow departed the band in 2001 to pursue solo projects. JA-Jazz has been off-duty since 2008. Multi-instrumentalist Paul Malmström became official member of the band in 2008.[2]
The Pepe Deluxé live line-up consists of Mirkka Paajanen (vocals), Miikka Paatelainen (guitar, theremin), Markku Reinikainen (drums), Ville Riippa (keyboards), James Spectrum (mixing, percussion) and Edward Greendanger (VJ).
Somewhere between big-beat techno and more laidback trip-hop, the first album by Pepe Deluxe works in familiar territory. Many of these samples have been heard before, and the influences (ranging from easy listening to soundtracks to hip-hop) aren't very original either. Even if Super Sound doesn't earn points for the sound, however, it's an album of crisp grooves and hook-inflected tracks that never get boring.

A weird cult figure from France that was more known as a poet and a general counter culture activist, that did one of the zaniest album with GONG.
His first album released under the MELMOTH pseudo was called "La Devanture Des Ivresses" (1970) and was long recitals of texts accompanied with music. He actually won a prize for that album and received critical acclaim.
A second album was released under the name DASHIELL HEDAYAT and he called it "Obsolete" (1971). The name DASHIELL HEDAYAT was a tribute to Dashiell Hammett (American author of detective novels and short stories, a screenplay writer and political activist) and Sadegh Hedayat (Iranian writer, translator and intellectual).
This album over the years became a real cult object because of the general freakiness, the presence of the almost copmlete GONG (many GongHeads consider this album the best they did), and the participation of beat poet and general counter culture activist Willam Burroughs going along reciting his text.
GONG will then return to their career (taking a huge step up as they will do the famous RGI Trilogy and the "Camembert" thing) while DASHIELL HEDAYAT concentrated on literature.
He used the Hedayat name for his first books before taking on the name Jack-Alain Léger in 1973. Daniel Théron published most of his book under the name Léger and had a bestseller with "Monsignore". Later he also wrote books under the names Eve Saint-Roch and Paul Smaïl.

Jukebox Mambo Rumba And Afro-Latin Accented Rhythm & Blues
Jukebox Mambo: Rumba and Afro-Latin Accented Rhythm & Blues 1949-1960 was compiled by DJ Liam Large. This is the cat who dug crates to assemble Jazzman's previous Jukebox Jam set of vintage jumpers, swing, and blues. This comp explores a very particular kind of jukebox recording that existed primarily in the middle part of the 20th century and showcased music that has simply vanished -- in this form anyway -- on North American shores. The period began the same year Tito Puente nailed his first hit single ("Pa' los Rumberos") and brought the mambo to the mainstream, but given these recordings, it was clearly flourishing even on the margins before that; an underground era that made direct connections between Afro-Cuban and Latin music, American R&B and jazz. While many jazz fans are aware of historic recordings like Afro-Cubop by Machito, which featured Howard McGhee on trumpet, or his recordings with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker during the height of the bop era, these sides are more obscure, and focus more deeply on employing the "Latin tinge" in dance music. Since these records were made for jukeboxes and, by association, for dancers, they were dismissed -- at best -- or completely ignored by jazz purists. (They have issues anyway and always have.) Check out set-opener "Ojai" by Joe Lutcher, which marries hard-swinging big band to Latin percussion, skittering, low-end beats and rich harmonies. Danny Cobb's "My Isabella" may have a killer R&B vocal, but dig how the bongos and timbales ride atop even the horn section. Gerald Wilson's "Mambo Mexicana" gets right inside the contrasting time signatures between a sprinting mambo groove, and bebop's furious tempi, all the while arraying the horns with a rich, timbral palette that walks the line between Mexican folk and North American swing melodies. Another highlight is Dave Bartholomew's "Shrimp & Gumbo," with its cowbell, claves, and wailing New Orleans' R&B vocal. The tune's rhythms walk a tightrope between Cuban mambo and Caribbean calypso infused with the blues. There are three different packages available: a limited box of six 10" records (which includes four bonus tracks and a hardback book), LP or CD. No matter which you choose you'll be treated to copious notes and complete discographical information to accompany the music. All of these tunes are deep groovers. DJ Liam Large dug deep, got his hands dirty, and came out with a jewel; it's one of the finest archival collections of 2012.

Skeletons - Afrobeat, Contemporary Jazz
A very exciting new project from the man at the helm of the Nostalgia 77 ship Ben Lamdin, this is one of the draws of the Summer as the Brighton bunch turn their hand to a live, afro psychedelic funk band called The Skeleton.
Benedic Lamdin is a musician, producer and engineer. He has produced a string of highly acclaimed LPs as Nostalgia 77 for Tru Thoughts; he also produces all the releases for his own label, Impossible Ark, including this one. He says: "Skeletons is a made up band. I kid you not - it doesn't exist. These musicians never stood in the studio together, they just passed through my house or left some scraps of sound behind after sessions we were working on. This record is like a guy, pieced together and ready for the bonfire... Some of the music here started life as commissions for a library music company, pastiches and forgeries paid for by the current vogue for a certain style of African jazz. Once I'd done a few though I couldn't stop... to me the whole thing has been a self indulgent forgery, an act of mindless fun. If it sounds good then it's because I just enjoyed the music and enjoyed myself." The Skeletons track, Positive Force, which appears on this album, was given an early airing on Impossible Ark: A Compilation in October, to immense acclaim and support from tastemakers including Ashley Beedle (X-Press 2/Ministry Of Sound Radio/RBMA), Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1), Craig Charles (BBC 6Music) and Snowboy; and excellent reviews from all corners, from i-DJ magazine through to Mercury Prize Recommends. Acid Jazz Movie and TV Themes contains a number of familiar themes ("Mission: Impossible," "Rollerball, " "Love Boat, " "Top of the Pops, " "Dirty Harry, " "The Flintstones") that have been arranged as acid-jazz songs. Clearly, the album was designed to appeal to the hipper-than-thou audience that celebrates kitsch, not quality, but peel back the ironic layers, and there are some intriguing beats and textures here. There just aren't enough to make it worthwhile to anyone but patient, open-minded listeners.

Instrumentals SOUL-STYLE - Jazz, Funk / Soul
Club Sounds, a bit of funk, a Latin groove, a slow jazz walk, uptown dancers, late night smoochers. Plenty of organ. Plenty of soul. No twangy guitar. No swing jazz. No frantic honkin’ and screamin’. Just Instrumentals Soul-Style. The blues instrumental record stretches back to 1940s jazz, and with the introduction of funky, Latin bass lines in the 50s, thingsgot a little more interesting.
