Sebastião Rodrigues Maia - The Godfather of Brazilian Soul

Em 1957, fundou o grupo The Sputniks, onde cantou junto a Roberto Carlos.

Tim Maia, The Godfather of Brazilian Soul

Brazilian funk legend…soul superstar…religious cult…drugs…prison…aliens!! Wonder what these have in common? All of these describe the larger than life Tim Maia. Short in stature but huge in personality (a press release says he was 5’7″ tall, “6′ with the Afro”).
His story is the stuff of legend. He grew up in Rio de Janeiro, formed his first group at 14 and even gave quitar lessons to local gang members. In 1959 at aged 17, he illegally emigrated to New York. There he went to school, worked as a janitor and formed a band called The Ideals. He was eventually send to jail and deported back to Brazil for smoking weed in a stolen car. American soul music and the civil rights movement left a big impression on him.
In 1970 Maia released his debut LP. It was labeled “a massive cannonball into the pool” of Brazilian culture. It brought together Brazilian pop music and American soul/funk in a whole new way. It spent 24 weeks on the top of the charts.
Maia’s drug use was well known and grew along with his fame. In 1976, Maia joined the Racional Energy cult and he stopped doing drugs, lost weight, wore all white robes, performed and recorded only for cult members. Cultura Racional believed that humans are really aliens that need to reconnect with an elemental form of energy through the teachings of a book called Universo Em Desencanto (Universe in Disenchantment). He recorded two albums during this time. He eventually split from the cult in 1976 but said these albums could never be released during his lifetime.
“Tim Maia became a member of the Brazilian Socialist Party (Partido Socialista Brasileiro – PSB) in October 1997. He was rumoured to have joined the party in order to run for a seat in the Federal Senate for Rio de Janeiro in the 1998 general elections, but died before that. When asked by a reporter why he chose to join the then small PSB, he replied: “Brazil is the only country where – in addition to whores cumming, pimps being jealous, and drug dealers being addicted – poor people vote on the right-wing”. His phrase would become a famous aphorism on the way Brazilians face politics.”

He died at 55 years old after a heart attack in 1998. He would have turned 70 this year. After years of negotiations, ‘Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia’ is set be be released. You can find it on iTunes.

Sempre vale a pena.

I always get the poison that I need to be alive, to see and sing/so poison me to get my mind way out/my mind way in").

The Velvet Underground - Rock (Lou Reed)

The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 in New York City by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, multi-instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise (replaced by Moe Tucker in 1965). The band was initially active between 1965 and 1973, and was briefly managed by the pop artist Andy Warhol, serving as the house band at the Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967. Their debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (with German-born singer and model Nico), was released in 1967 to critical indifference and poor sales but has become critically acclaimed; in 2003, Rolling Stone called it the "most prophetic rock album ever made."

The band's integration of rock and the avant-garde achieved little commercial success during its existence, but it is now recognized as one of the most influential bands in rock, underground, experimental, and alternative music. The provocative subject matter, musical experiments, and often nihilistic attitudes explored in the band's work proved influential in the development of punk rock and new wave music. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the band No. 19 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". In 2017, a study of AllMusic's catalog indicated the Velvet Underground as the fifth most frequently cited artist influence in its database. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 by Patti Smith.

ZZ Top - Rock (USA)

ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band has, since 1970, consisted of vocalist/guitarist Billy Gibbons (the band's leader, main lyricist and musical arranger), bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. "As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers", according to critic Michael "Cub" Koda. "Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists working in the arena rock idiom while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support."

The band released its first album—called ZZ Top's First Album—in 1971. Beginning with blues-inspired rock, the trio later incorporated new wave, punk rock and dance-rock by using synthesizers. Their songs have a reputation for containing humorous lyrics laced with double entendres and innuendo.

The band's top-selling album is their 1983 release Eliminator, which sold more than 10 million copies in the United States. Total record sales of 25 million place ZZ Top among the top-100-selling artists in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. That includes 11 gold, seven platinum and three multi-platinum albums as of 2016, according to the RIAA. By 2014, ZZ Top had sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.

ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Jean-Luc Ponty - Violin on Fusion Jazz

Jean-Luc Ponty (born 29 September 1942) is a French jazz violinist and composer. At first, the violin proved to be a handicap; few at the time viewed the instrument as having a legitimate place in the modern jazz vocabulary. With a powerful sound that eschewed vibrato, Ponty distinguished himself with bebop phrasing and a punchy style influenced more by horn players than by anything previously tried on the violin. In 1964 at age 22 he released his debut album, Jazz Long Playing. He performed on stage in Basel, Switzerland, with string players Stuff Smith, Stéphane Grappelli, and Svend Asmussen. The performance was released as the album Violin Summit (1966).

John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet invited Ponty to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1967, which led to a recording contract with the World Pacific and the albums Electric Connection with the Gerald Wilson Big Band and Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio. That year also brought Sunday Walk, the first collaboration between Ponty and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen.

In 1969 Frank Zappa composed the music for Ponty's solo album King Kong (World Pacific). In 1972 Elton John invited Ponty to contribute to his Honky Chateau album. At the urging of Zappa and The Mothers of Invention who wanted him to join their tour, Ponty emigrated with his wife and two young daughters to the United States and made his home in Los Angeles. He continued to work on a variety of projects – including two of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra albums Apocalypse (1974) and Visions of the Emerald Beyond (1974) and tours until 1975, when he signed with Atlantic.

For the next decade Ponty toured the world repeatedly and recorded 12 consecutive albums, all of which reached the Billboard jazz charts top five, selling millions of albums. His early Atlantic recordings, such as 1976's Aurora and Imaginary Voyage, established Ponty as one of the leading figures in jazz-rock. He went on to crack the Top 40 with the album Enigmatic Ocean in 1977 and Cosmic Messenger in 1978. In 1984 a video of time-lapse images was produced by Louis Schwarzberg for the song "Individual Choice".

On Tchokola (Epic, 1991) Ponty combined acoustic and electric violins for the first time with polyrhythmic sounds of West Africa. He performed for two months in the U.S. and Canada with African expatriates he had met in Paris. In 1993 he returned to Atlantic with the album No Absolute Time. In 1995 he joined guitarist Al Di Meola and bassist Stanley Clarke to record an acoustic album, The Rite of Strings. This trio undertook a six-month tour of North America, South America, and Europe. He reunited his American band in 1996 for live performances following the release of a double album for Atlantic entitled Le Voyage: The Jean-Luc Ponty Anthology. One of these concerts was recorded in Detroit, Michigan, and released in February 1997 by Atlantic under the title Live at Chene Park.

In 1997 Ponty reunited his group of Western and African musicians to pursue the fusion music he had begun to explore in 1991. They toured for three years from the Hawaiian Islands to Poland and in North America and Europe. Ponty performed duet with bassist Miroslav Vitous in December 1999. In January 2000, he participated in Lalo Schifrin's recording Esperanto. In June 2001 he performed duets with Russian violinist Vadim Repin and at the Film Music Festival in Poland with American jazz violinist Regina Carter.

In August 2001 Ponty released his album Life Enigma on his label (J.L.P. Productions), a return to his concept from the 1970s with modern production. He played all the instruments on some tracks and was joined by band members others. He gave a concert with his band in his native town of Avranches in the French province of Normandie on 21 September 2001. He was honored during a ceremony at City Hall. He then embarked on a tour in the U.S. in October and November 2001. In May 2001 he recorded a concert with the same musicians at the opera house in Dresden, Germany. This recording was released in July 2002 on Live at Semper Opera. In January 2003 he toured India for the first time, seven shows in six major cities for the Global Music Festival organized by Indian violinist L. Subramaniam. He and bassist Guy Nsangué Akwa performed with Subramaniam's band and drummer Billy Cobham who was a guest on that tour. In 2004 the DVD Jean-Luc Ponty in Concert was released. It contained a concert with his band filmed in Warsaw in 1999. The band toured in 2004 in France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Lithuania (and in Mumbai, India, in their first concert as a complete ensemble).

Ponty performed on a reunion tour with Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola from June to October 2004 in the U.S. and Canada. In 2005 he toured with Trio! with Stanley Clarke and Béla Fleck. In 2006 he reunited Jean Luc Ponty & His Band and toured in the U.S., Chile, Venezuela, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, The Middle East and India; they recorded a studio album called The Atacama Experience with guitarists Allan Holdsworth and Philip Catherine. In April 2012 Ponty performed in an acoustic trio with Clarke and guitarist Bireli Lagrene for the second set of a concert at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris to celebrate five decades in music. The first set featured Ponty with a string orchestra. In 2014 Ponty recorded a jazz album entitled D-Stringz with Clarke and Lagrene. In September 2014 Ponty formed the Anderson Ponty Band with Jon Anderson, lead singer of Yes. After the released of the album Better Late Than Never they toured in the U.S. and Canada.

Ponty has been an avid user of five-string electric violins (with a low C string) since 1978. He sometimes uses a six-string electric violin called the Violectra, with both the low C and low F strings (not to be confused with the "violectra" he played from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s that had the usual four strings but tuned an octave lower). He combined violin with MIDI, distortion boxes, phase shifters, and wah-wah pedals. This resulted in his signature, almost synthesizer-like sound.

In 2011, Ponty was invited by bandleader/keyboardist Chick Corea to join the group Return to Forever for a series of concerts throughout the year. The group is labeled 'Return to Forever IV', as it is the fourth incarnation of the group. Ponty had first recorded with Corea on his 1976 solo album My Spanish Heart.
