Lewis Allan “Lou” Reed was born in Brooklyn, in 1942. A fan of doo-wop and early rock & roll (he movingly inducted Dion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989), Reed also took formative inspiration during his studies at Syracuse University with the poet Delmore Schwartz. After college, he worked as a staff songwriter for the novelty label Pickwick Records (where he had a minor hit in 1964 with a dance-song parody called “The Ostrich”). In the mid-Sixties, Reed befriended Welsh musician John Cale, a classically trained violist who had performed with groundbreaking minimalist composer La Monte Young. Reed and Cale formed a band called the Primitives, then changed their name to the Warlocks. After meeting guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker, they became the Velvet Underground. With a stark sound and ominous look, the band caught the attention of Andy Warhol, who incorporated the Velvets into his Exploding Plastic Inevitable. “Andy would show his movies on us,” Reed said. “We wore black so you could see the movie. But we were all wearing black anyway.”
With the Velvet Underground in the late Sixties, Reed fused street-level urgency with elements of European avant-garde music, marrying beauty and noise, while bringing a whole new lyrical honesty to rock & roll poetry. As a restlessly inventive solo artist, from the Seventies into the 2010s, he was chameleonic, thorny and unpredictable, challenging his fans at every turn. Glam, punk and alternative rock are all unthinkable without his revelatory example. “One chord is fine,” he once said, alluding to his bare-bones guitar style. “Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you’re into jazz.”

Foi considerado o 81º melhor guitarrista de todos os tempos pela revista norte-americana Rolling Stone. Foi um dos vocais do The Velvet Underground, influenciando Iggy Pop, New York Dolls e David Bowie. Mais tarde toda a cena pós-punk inglesa. Admirador de Edgar Allan Poe e Raymond Chandler, além de James Joyce, a quem faz referências em Blue Mask.
Lou Reed nasceu no Brooklin e cresceu em Freeport, Long Island. Sua família era judia e, embora Lou tenha se declarado judeu, ele adicionou: " My God is rock'n'roll. It’s an obscure power that can change your life. The most important part of my religion is to play guitar."

Lou aprendeu a tocar guitarra de ouvido, escutando o rádio. Desde cedo se interessou pelo Rock and Roll & Rhythm Blues, tendo tocado em várias bandas durante seu High School. Suas primeiras gravações aconteceram com a banda chamada The Jades (1955). Em 1956, ainda em sua adolescência, Lou se declara Bissexual, e é submetido a um tratamento de Terapia Eletroconvulsiva (eletrochoque), supostamente para "curar" sua bissexualidade. Ele escreveu sobre esta experiência na canção "Kill Your Sons" de 1974. Em uma entrevista, Lou comentou sobre esta experiência: "They put the thing down your throat so you don't swallow your tongue, and they put electrodes on your head. That's what was recommended in Rockland State Hospital to discourage homosexual feelings. The effect is that you lose your memory and become a vegetable. Em 1960, Lou começou a estudar jornalismo, direção de filmes e composição de textos na Syracuse University. Ao mesmo tempo, ele era líder de um pelotão na ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps - um programa universitário para treinamento militar), mas foi expulso por apontar uma arma (descarregada) para a cabeça de um superior. Em 1961, Lou comandou um programa de rádio noturno na WAER, chamado Excursions On A Wobbly Rail, tocando principalmente doo wop, rhythm and blues e jazz, principalmente o FREE JAZZ desenvolvido nos meados dos anos 50. Muitas das técnicas de Lou Reed na guitarra, por exemplo, guitar-drum roll, foram inspiradas em saxofonistas de jazz, como Ornette Coleman. Lou Reed se graduou com honras na Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences em Junho de 1964.
Além de um grande instrumentista, durante a Universidade, Lou Reed desenvolveu seu lado poeta, inspirado principalmente por Delmore Schwart. Por isso, as canções de Lou Reed sempre tiveram letras magníficas, que segundo ele: "to bring the sensitivities of the novel to rock music" ou "with the simplest language imaginable, and very short, you can accomplish the most astonishing heights."

Lou Reed teve uma brilhante carreira, tanto no Velvet Underground como em sua carreira solo, produzindo, compondo, tocando e cantando canções incríveis. Em 2003, a Rolling Stone Magazine publicou a lista dos 500 greatest albums of all time, incluindo dois álbuns de Lou Reed - Transformer e Berlin.
Em maio de 2013 passou por um transplante de fígado. Voltou a ser internado em julho com um quadro de desidratação severa, vindo a morrer em 27 de outubro do mesmo ano.
Escolhi dois álbuns muito interessantes, que na verdade são o mesmo: BERLIN.
Berlin é o terceiro álbum solo de Lou Reed, e na época de lançamento, a Rolling Stone Magazine o classificou como um desatre. O álbum é uma trágica Opera Rock sobre um casal que se dá muito mal, abordando temas como uso de drogas, prostituição, depressão, violência doméstica e suicídio. Uma parte marcante e muito forte da canção "The Kids", se refere a Carolina (a esposa) tendo seus filhos levados pelas autoridades, e os gritos de seus filhos chamando pela mãe... Devido ao fracasso comercial deste álbum, o Show Berlin não foi realizado...
Berlin: Live At St. Ann's Warehouse é um filme e um álbum ao vivo, realizado em 2008, St. Ann's Warehouse no Brooklyn, durante 5 apresentações em 2006. A Tour Berlin foi a primeira vez que Lou Reed tocou o álbum inteiro, ao vivo, 33 anos após o lançamento do álbum original. (Eu comprei este DVD e vale a pena. Um showzaço!!!)
The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 in New York City by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, multi-instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise (replaced by Moe Tucker in 1965). The band was initially active between 1965 and 1973, and was briefly managed by the pop artist Andy Warhol, serving as the house band at the Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967. Their debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (with German-born singer and model Nico), was released in 1967 to critical indifference and poor sales but has become critically acclaimed; in 2003, Rolling Stone called it the "most prophetic rock album ever made."
The band's integration of rock and the avant-garde achieved little commercial success during its existence, but it is now recognized as one of the most influential bands in rock, underground, experimental, and alternative music. The provocative subject matter, musical experiments, and often nihilistic attitudes explored in the band's work proved influential in the development of punk rock and new wave music. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the band No. 19 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". In 2017, a study of AllMusic's catalog indicated the Velvet Underground as the fifth most frequently cited artist influence in its database. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 by Patti Smith.
